a very early Man

Smoke Daddy and his crew have been testing the neon in the Man over the past couple of nights. He was still burning bright as the sky got light this morning.

About the author: John Curley

John Curley (that's me) has been Burning since the relatively late date of 2004, and in 2008 I spent the better part of a month on the playa, documenting the building and burning of Black Rock City in words and pictures. I loved it, and I've been doing it ever since. I was a newspaper person in a previous life, and I spent many years at the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time I left, in 2007, I was the deputy managing editor in charge of Page One and the news sections of the paper. Since then, I've turned a passion for photography into a second career. I shoot for editorial, commercial and private clients. I've also taught a little bit, including two years at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and a year at San Francisco State University. I live on the San Mateo coast, just south of San Francisco in California.

I think you mean to say, “Hopefully he burns efficiently or more quickly this year.”

Yeah the man did burn differently last year. But it will as long as it’s not on a huge structure that provides tons of fuel. Cargo cult blew my mind. Still have glass that was produced from such a hot fire. I remember standing on top of that solid steel spinning wheel the man was placed on. It was folded like a taco. Then a beautiful crimson rose came up to me and gifted me some melted neon. Best post man burn ever! On another note…The embrace burn was the one that just wouldn’t burn down! I imagine they put some planning into how it would burn but the thing was built on solid water towers and just would t fall over. It was amazing seeing the heavy equipment operators come in and pull at each side with chains on their lifts and back out ever so “safely”. Lol. I’m glad I was the only one out of my camp who stayed up/woke up to see this madness!
