MOOP Map Live, Day 6: The Outer Limits

Burning Man Playa Restoration 2013, Day 8.

Hello out there all you MOOP maniacs and line sweepers extraordinaire! Here in the Black Rock Desert, your Playa Restoration team is in the final rounds of what has been a truly epic season. With just days left before we head back to the real world, we have swept throughout the Black Rock City grid, throughout the inner playa and up through the Man to the Temple. The pace has been quick and efficient, and the Restoration moopers have covered an impressive amount of ground.

It all comes down to next week, when the Bureau of Land Management arrives to inspect our site. Will we pass the inspection? Right now, it’s looking good, but the inspection is a strict examination of Burning Man’s Leave No Trace commitment; we never know what will happen until that moment of truth.

What we do know so far is that the city is extremely clean this year. On Day 6, the Resto line sweeps made their way through the walk-in camping area, Black Rock City’s outer reaches where the population is scarce and the traffic scarcer. After a fast-paced half day with hardly any MOOP to be found, your Restoration All-Stars were driven off the playa by a cold, windy front closely followed by a heavy downpour. We welcomed a chance to get off our feet, retreat to the Black Rock Saloon and take a well-deserved day off.

Next time, we’ll get a glimpse at the back streets of M and N, plus the Esplanade strip. I won’t lie to you: there’s a bit of rough road ahead. But as of Day 6, all is beautiful and green.

REMEMBER: This is a work in progress, not the final map.

MOOP Map Legend:

MoopMeter-2013day3GREEN: GO! GO! GO! The Line Sweep moves quickly because it’s clean. Minimal time and effort spent in this location.
YELLOW: Caution! The Line Sweep moves at a stop-and-go pace. Moderate time and effort spent in this location.
RED: Full stop. The Line Sweepers are on their hands and knees. A ton of MOOP. Extensive time and effort in this location.

Wondering what the black dots are? Those are the locations where we found larger items left behind on the playa last week: trash bags, abandoned tents, scaffolding, anything bigger than a bread box. All those items have been removed, but we do record their GPS points.

Green, clean, MOOP-free and beautiful. Thanks, walk-in campers, for always picking up your campsites and packing everything out. We love your work.

Tune in soon to find out what we discovered along the Esplanade, plus a glimpse of the back blocks on the 9:00 side of the city. It’s coming up real soon on MOOP Map Live 2013!

It would be great to know how many 55 gallon drums of moop were picked up by the volunteer line sweepers each year. We would get a sense of the community success. I heard that one year all the afterburn moop fit in 5 drums. Any truth to that? Thanx to all the volunteers.

It would be good to know what kind of moop was found in a camp especially if it was serious. Last year I had a red mark in my camp and it is bugging me what it was? I was the last one to leave and we raked the whole camp and line walked it. Did I miss something did someone leave something after I left, did something blow in after I left. I would be good to know so I could correct it if possible.

Duncan, we do keep track of that, but we are now using dumpsters instead of drums. Hopefully I can give out that number at the end of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a year where it all fit in 5 drums, but with the size of the city now, it would be pretty extraordinary to find so little MOOP :)

Dr. Realz, if you’re in a placed camp, then you can get in touch with Placement a couple of months after Restoration is finished. We put together a report and give it to them so they can talk with theme camps about what was found.
