I got a copy from the author at center camp years ago … read it … enjoyed it … and passed it on.

But before letting it go I wrote a message to the author and other readers in the cover. It asked that whoever read the book should also leave a message and then pass it on … to hopefully one day return to center camp :)

I have an autographed copy by the author, who gave it to me at -where else- Center Camp. It’s huge fun, and the author is obviously a very experienced burner. The strange things that happen to Dex, the interesting people he meets, and the nail-biting, totally bizarre conclusion are just SO Burning Man. A pity it’s out of print. I was going to get a bunch of copies and give them away as gifts. If you can find it, get it. It’s a hoot !

“for Burners that want to relieve a bit of the moment, it’s worth picking up.”

Thorough review — I enjoyed the deep details in the novel about many aspects of Burning Man. I was more than a little off-put by the idea of a murder at Burning Man (it gets enough negative press in the mainstream media!) but it made for an exciting read.

As of about mid-2009 the novel was out of print but I found a used paperback copy on Amazon for about $5.

I’ve got to say the idea of reviews of books about Burning Man is a great one — I too would like to see a review here of “This is Burning Man.” I read it shortly before attending my first Burn in 2005 and was better-prepared for having read it. It’s good for any Burner to know the history of Burning Man — especially so for virgins.

+1 Jon Mitchell, this will be a great series. Thanks Matt for starting with something unexpected too, rather than going for one of the more obvious/reverent books and working towards the outer edges of what “serious burners” might be open to. I’m on vacation right now and might go ahead and pick this book up!

I read this a few years back, and had much the same reaction: wasn’t sure about it at first, but it grew on me, and I wound up ultimately quite enjoying it.

Not to get too personal, but I think that the book could also be said to be about a dream in commoditized paperback sales. What a formulaic premise for a book.

The objective character of your review is far, far more impressive than I can expect that book, itself, would be. My apologies, to the author of the book being reviewed. I cannot stand commoditized fiction, unless it’s being so, for the point of it being commoditized fiction. I’ve yet to find a Dada daddy in modern fiction, though.

Still, I know, not everyone so takes exception ;)
