I had a similar event to myself heading out of BRC at the end of the 2007 burn. The u-joint sheared off the back axle to by Bronco II, and I couldn’t engage the front axle because I was already having issues, (read FORD). We were about 15 miles out from where the playa ended. A couple of people stopped, but weren’t really any help. Turned out I broke down in front of the only house for 5 miles in any direction. Bill and Marilyn Crevelins where my saviors that day. And my friend Lem. They let me use their SAT phone to call AAA, but I didn’t know if they calls where really getting through cause it kept dropping off. Turns out I had 3 tow trucks coming out, 2 of them talked to each other and canceled their calls, but one unlucky soul still came out only to be turned away. Bill drove Lem to Gerlach (about 30 minute drive each way) to get a new u-joint. The one they had wasn’t perfect but it work with a little rigging. Bill also had a welder in his shop and towed my truck onto his property to be worked on. Lem was able to weld the U-Joint in place and it was good as new. Then Bill and Marilyn invited us into their home for beer and cheese. It was better than it sounds. We made it home without incident after that. I’ll never forget them, and I hope I see them again one day.

many of the best stories in my life have been about being at the bottom and having some human open their hearts and turn it into magic. quite a few have occurred at burning man.
