The Man is risen

look-whos-hereThe excitement is thicker than ever, people. The light is beautiful, the Man base … I’m not wanting to blow smoke here, but it’s pretty damn incomparable.

And now, the Man himself has taken his place in the middle of things, right where he belongs.

Can you feel it?

It’s all getting so close.

About the author: John Curley

John Curley (that's me) has been Burning since the relatively late date of 2004, and in 2008 I spent the better part of a month on the playa, documenting the building and burning of Black Rock City in words and pictures. I loved it, and I've been doing it ever since. I was a newspaper person In a previous life, and I spent many years at the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time I left, in 2007, I was the deputy managing editor in charge of Page One and the news sections of the paper. Since then, I've turned a passion for photography into a second career. I shoot for editorial, commercial and private clients, and I'm especially fond of shooting weddings. I'm also the editor at large of the Tasting Panel magazine, which is devoted to the beverage industry. I've also taught a bit, including two years at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and a year at San Francisco State University. I live on a (house)boat in Alameda, California.

  • Beautiful!!

I am leaving early to begin my first trip to the man.

No way I can sleep tonight. Instead, with my eyes closed, I am floating on a calm blue sea of envy, from every person I know who isn’t making this trip.

  • YES.
    I can feel it.
Whether you are going to the playa this year or not,
    you can feel it.
It’s not on the playa, it’s in your heart.
I can’t wait to be welcomed home by him.

  • soooo close! I leave today straight from work! I can’t wait.

Its never real for me until I cross the border! My friends just got denied entry yesterday and won’t be able to make it out this year :(

Here’s hoping my border crossing goes more smoothly and I get to see the man in person!

  • Thanks to your blogs & pix, I haven’t had a full night’s sleep in over a week. I keep waking up with visions of the playa dancing in my head. Not a bad way to spend the wee hours though!! The anticipation is bigger for me this year for some reason. Hmmm, I wonder what the Man has in store.
